The Machine And Modern Education

May 30, 2008

As a teacher in Hong Kong, I recently attended my school’s annual picnic, held in a bushland area. Later in the day, I saw a line of boys sitting on a short concrete wall, heads down and brows furrowed, as they worked their Game Boys in furious style. They seemed oblivious to their presence in nature. Humankind’s relationship with nature has always been intricately entwined with inner realms of the mind - the romantic, the spiritual and the mystical.

The eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Romantics mused about the relationship between humanity and nature, the human and divine. They also reflected on the mystical east and its deep meditative and spiritual traditions, which they believed transcended the shallowness of western society.

The quest of the Romantic seems to be all but dead in the modern world. Yet the greatest irony is that this is most notable in East Asia. I have taught in Taiwan, mainland China and Hong Kong. My conclusion is that modern Chinese education has destroyed all links with the deeper human psyche.

Students no longer have an inner world. Their days are spent focusing upon textbooks, listening glazed-eyed to microphone-wielding teachers, or peering at Powerpoint presentations and computers. In their leisure they amuse themselves with shopping and playing computer games. Whatever happened to the inner mind, quiet reflection and deep self-awareness?

Materialistic images saturate the modern knowledge economy and Asian culture. Life in mainland China has become a scramble for money, and its education system a devouring of foot-high piles of text books in order to pass “the exam”.

During the Qing dynasty, candidates for the civil service exam were herded into tiny examination cubicle. Not much has changed, and it seems that the only students ever let out of “the box” are those who fail the system.

The “reward” for success was and still is the systematic extermination of an inner life, and erasure of any deep connection with the human spirit.

Every year East Asia becomes more prosperous financially. But has something vital been lost in the process? The old biblical query is apt: “what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Ironically, a prime motivation to reinstate inner worlds into modern education may be economic.

Daniel Pink in A Whole New Mind argues that the future of developed nations will belong to “R-directed” thinkers - right-brainers. Work will require high-concept, high-touch senses - namely design, synthesis of information into narrative, finding integration and the big picture, empathy, play and deeper meaning. Hi-tech will not be enough.

If Pink is correct, the capacity for creativity, empathy and a deeper spiritual connection with self and others will be vital. This is because much of the mundane mechanical work of yesteryear is increasingly being done by machines and cheap labour in emerging economies.

The strength of developed economies lies in their capacity for innovation, creativity, seeing outside the box, empathy and intuition. Those in most demand and most able to prosper in this age will be creators, empathisers, pattern-recognisers and meaning- makers.

People in developed economies have mostly moved beyond survival needs. Many are seeking deeper meaning and self-realisation. People want more than the ability to clock into the office and wander shopping malls on the weekends to fill the coffers of the consumer society.

We owe it to future generations to ensure that all the essential needs of human beings are met through our education system, not merely the needs of those in power to retain affluence and control the system.

For Hong Kong, the danger is that if our graduates graduate with a “Confucian” mentality of subservience, compliance and shallow regurgitation of perceived wisdom, it will quickly be superseded by the Asian giants.

The days of teachers standing in front of classes with microphones as students passively copy notes must stop. The Powerpoint presentation is not progress either, merely an extension of this. Somebody has to take the initiative here and see that this system will eventually create mediocrity.

At the recent 17th Communist Party Congress, President Hu Jintao’s concept of the “harmonious society” took a back seat to “scientific development” . But eventually “scientific development” will not be enough. The future cannot merely be about more money and more machines for everyone, with cyborgs to turn the cogs.

When I embarked on my doctoral studies I sought a supervisor who could help me master the subject matters which inspired me most deeply. I chose somebody I considered a man of wisdom. I did not seek the most “prestigious” university. I chose what inspired passion within me.

The word “inspiration” emerges from ancient Greek and Latin roots, and is related to the concepts of “breath” and “spirit”. Sadly, I do not see too many students in Hong Kong breathing too deeply. Instead I see restriction and fear.

To be inspired, to be passionate, we need to reawaken inner worlds.

When Charles Darwin was an old man he lamented that he could no longer enjoy poetry. He complained that he had become something akin to a machine for recording and classifying data. Let us hope that the future of education and humanity takes a more balanced path.

Could Hong Kong be a leader in this respect? First, we will need to let some young (and mature) people out of their boxes.

NLP Accelerated Learning Techniques For Guitar

May 30, 2008

This article is about exploring the link between NLP Accelerated Learning Techniques and learning to play the guitar.

Playing a guitar requires the application of knowledge and skills in a real time environment. As such it is a great situation to develop NLP and Accelerated Learning skills.

To play the guitar you need to be able to put your fingers in the right places at the right time. But before you have got to that point you need to be able to translate the dots and lines on a sheet of music to those positions on the guitar. Or, if you are improvising listen to what the rest of your band are doing and translate that to the most appropriate places to put your fingers on the guitar…all in real time with no opportunity to pause for thought.

There are many ideas floating around about music. Many are not helpful for people learning to play. These include reading music is complex, you have to have talent and playing an instrument is hard.

Deliberately braking down limiting beliefs whilst building up new and empowering ones is a great way of starting with music. A classic example of this is Duncan Lorien’s powerful Understanding of Music Seminar. Duncan has built in to the course ways of challenging old beliefs and installing those beliefs that make learning music much easier.

Practice routines are another area worth looking at. It is only PERFECT practice that makes perfect, so finding the right drills is important. Being stretched and challenged is great so long as it does not lead to hesitation and stumbling.

Perhaps a typical situation for a guitarist is finding a small section of a new piece of music they are learning that causes them trouble. Usually they will over practice that sections until it is perfect and then have difficulty putting it back into the whole piece. Along with this they might criticise themselves and install unhelpful beliefs and emotions about that part of the piece of music and their ability to play it.

You could take the difficult section and turn it into a series of finger exercises playing at different speeds, frets and keys…even different fingers. All of a sudden you have taken a problem and turned it into a routine for developing your muscle memory and flexibility. Celebrating this would be a true NLP Accelerated Learning approach.

On the Understanding of Music Seminar you get 100 ten minute guitar lessons that have been specifically designed to stretch every area of your playing but still be achievable. The brilliance of this is it only tasks ten minutes a day to dramatically improve you ability if you know what and how to practice. A good NLP Training Course will show you all the right accelerated learning techniques to be able to devise this approach for any context. Seeing a complex application and having a skilled tutor such as Duncan Lorien showing you how to apply these techniques is a great way to not only learn to play guitar but also how to learn.

Developing good practice routines and developing empowering beliefs are just two factors in developing skills using accelerated learning. The best way of understanding how to do this effectively is to invest in a good NLP Training Course.

Do I Need A Statistics Tutor?

May 30, 2008

Statistics help is certainly necessary especially if you are one of the people that are having difficulty with numbers. If you are in college and you need help with statistics then you certainly have to act as soon as possible. In college, everything is fast-paced. This means that if you can not keep up with the rest of the class, you are going to get left behind, and you will likely end up failing the course. You certainly do not want this to happen to you. If you have homework in statistics then you certainly need to get statistics homework help. Should you get a tutor? Should you enrol yourself in a supplementary class? What should you do in order to understand statistics in the best manner possible? If you have no idea what to do then you should ask advice from people you know well and that know you well also. They can guide you on your statistics help.

First, you have to examine the way you learn. How do you learn? Do you learn by practice? Do you learn by seeing others do it and then you will simply imitate it? If you would like to make sure that you get the knowledge necessary to pass a statistics course then you have to understand your preferred learning method. If you think that you can learn quickly by practice then you probably need to study more and practice more. If you are not good studying on your own then you have to get a tutor. A tutor will be able to guide you through the learning process and you will be able to take advantage of the learning opportunities as soon as possible. If you are not good with learning from a tutor then you should probably attend some sort of remedial class. This is a formal way of supplementing your formal class because you will still be in a class and you will still try to learn from everyone else. If you are not a fan of formal learning then you should probably consider joining a study group instead. This is a less formal way of learning in a group and you will certainly learn a lot from your peers this way.

Second, you have to commit to your learning method. When you know which way you want to learn and which way will be best for you, you can get the best statistics help possible. Committing to learning is certainly important. Without a commitment, you will not get the best help with statistics. Even when you have homework, you will not get statistics homework help in the best way if you are not committed. You have to commit and you shall learn well. Help with statistics starts with yourself. You have to pay attention to yourself and how you learn if you want to go somewhere and be a good statistics student. You should make the most of the opportunities available right now and you should never neglect the small details when it comes to learning.

The Apogee Of Statistical Consulting

May 30, 2008

Statistics is basically the study of mathematical data focused on probabilities and occurrences. If you would like to be familiar with statistics then you have to make sure that you get some sort of statistics consulting right away. Statistical consulting is necessary in a lot of fields. In demographics, if you would like to know the number of people that are above six feet tall in a certain area then you will need statistical data for that. Data analysis is certainly needed in a lot of fields also. If you would like to analyze why there are only ten percent of the population above six feet tall then you will need to get some statistics consulting right away.

There are a lot of things that you would like to know and statistics can certainly shed light onto that. For example, if you would like to understand the normal distribution curve then you will need some sort of statistical consulting for it. In the field of management, statistical consulting is important because the normal distribution curve plays a significant role in it. Without the statistics consulting necessary in a management firm, people will have a hard time managing people and their resources. The normal distribution curve is necessary because it analyzes the probability of success and the probabilities of failure in certain management decisions. Without a firm understanding of the normal distribution curve, you are going to have a hard time becoming a manger in a large firm. Even in small firms, management decisions are still based on probabilities. Are you going to push through with a certain project if there is only a thirty percent chance of making it successful? Are you going to risk everything else and put yourself on the line in this case? Management decisions are highly based on the rules of statistics and if you are planning to manage something later in life, you need some sort of statistics consulting or statistical consulting.

Even with hard data, you will need it analyzed as a manager. For example, if you would like to find out which of your employees is not performing well then you may get data of their work hours, their production, and their time offs. If you would like to find out which employee should win the employee of the month award then your management decisions will be based on data that has to be analyzed. You can not simply give that award out of your favouritism because all your employees will not like you if you do that.

There are a lot of statistical consulting jobs that you have to avail of especially if you are a manager. It is going to be difficult to manage a firm without analyzing the data there. If you would like to manage a firm properly then you have to do some sort of data analysis to keep your firm afloat and competitive. Without a firm understanding of your company’s data, you may be left behind the competition.

Casino Royale: The Algerian Love Knot Of Vesper Lynd

May 30, 2008

Ian Fleming’s first James Bond book was Casino Royale, and in it not only did he introduce us to his world of spycraft and high living, but also the very first Bond girl, Vesper Lynd. Bond has been sent on assignment to Royale-les-Eaux in Northern France, where his mission is to simply bankrupt a Russian backed trade union leader named Le Chiffre by beating him in the Casino; the game is baccarat, and the stakes are high.

Vesper is introduced to Bond by his contact in France, Rene Mathis, although Bond thinks she’s been sent “to do a man’s job” and resents her being there. However, he also finds something enigmatic about her too and despite not wanting to work with her, he does start to make plans for once the job is finished, despite the fact she seems cold toward him.

However, the mission doesn’t quite go as planned and ends up with Bond being strapped to a chair and his genitals whipped with a carpet beater. After some time in a French hospital he makes a recovery and while recuperating on the coast he seduces her.

Although many elements of the novel were retained for the movie in 2006 starring Daniel Craig as 007, the relationship between the two was slightly different; rather than acting coldly toward Bond, Vesper was rather aggressive instead. However, the part was excellently played by Eva Green, in one of the best Bond girl roles in the entire series.

And while the book Bond finds that Vesper has had an affair with a Polish pilot who was being imprisoned by the Russians, in the movie it turns the story into an affair with an Algerian; she always wears an Algerian love knot necklace given to her by him until towards the end of the film.

One of the big hits from the movie was the necklace worn by Bond Girl Vesper Lynd, played in the movie by Eva Green. The necklace was an Algerian love knot designed by Sophie Harley for the movie, supposedly given to the character by her Algerian lover before she succumbs to the charms of James Bond.

The Algerian love knot necklace is undoubtedly a lovely item of jewelry, and while it can be made for you on commission, the cost is prohibitively expensive. The price is currently £1,400 - some $2,800 at today’s exchange rate - which puts it out of reach of most people, but luckily Emitations was motivated to design an Algerian love knot inspired by the Sophie Harley design.

The Emitations Algerian love knot necklace is made from sterling silver and consists of four interlinked bands that have been elaborately decorated and presented on a triple chain. It makes a classy addition for day or night and would be the pride of place in any would be Bond girl’s jewelry box.

The necklace has proved so successful that Emitations has recently added matching Algerian love knot earrings and feedback from customers is uniformly high, praising its construction, finish and value for money, many claiming that the photographs do not do justice to the piece.

The Algerian love knot necklace makes an ideal present for the girlfriend or wife of a James Bond fan and although Emitations is based in the United States, they ship their products worldwide for a flat fee of $25.

The Top 5 Tips For Learning A Foreign Language

May 30, 2008

Learning a foreign language is not easy, but hopefully with our tips you will be able to successful master the foreign language you are studying or want to study. Our tips are based on the philosophy that “practice makes perfect”. That is to say, the more you practice the greater chance you have of mastering the foreign language. So without further adieu here is The Top 5 Tips for Learning a Foreign Language.

Tip #1

BE COMMITED.

This is an extremely important tip. Many people have the intention of learning a foreign language but fail to back it up with the proper commitment. Why take lessons and buy study material if you are not going to be serious about learning?

Spending 1 hour a day will not be enough. Our goal is to master the foreign language, this means putting serious effort into this endeavor. It may mean giving up your free time to master the foreign language. It might be hard to commit the time required to study but once you find your groove it will be easy.

Learning a foreign language might help you land a well paying job. Many US firms are global, so many employers will be looking for qualified personnel and personnel that can speak a foreign language. There are also many foreign companies who have companies set up in the US that need bilingual employees too. So be committed to learning and there will certainly be employment opportunities.

Tip #2

HAVE GOOD STUDY MATERIAL.

Having good study material makes learning easier.

If you are learning a foreign language through school or through the University you are stuck with the study material they give you. However, that doesn’t mean that you cannot go out and purchase additional study material to supplement what you have. Our goal is to master the language, passing the course will happen naturally if you master the material you are studying.

Tapes, cds, dvds, mp3, software downloads are good because you can listen to it over and over and over again.

Tip #3

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

Practice reading, practice writing, practice speaking.

Practice makes perfect.

You should study enough so that you feel like you understand the material inside and out. A good way of testing how much you know is to talk to your classmates or friends and explain to them what you learned. If you cannot teach what you have learned, then that means you have not mastered it and need to go back and study it harder.

1 hour of class will not be enough. So be prepared to do more. If you have any questions go see your instructor, teacher, or anyone that can help you, they would be more than willing to help you out. Put yourself in the frame of mind that you are going to a foreign country and will have no one to help you so learning the language is a must for your survival.

Tip #4

DO NOT TRANSLATE SENTENCES IN YOUR HEAD.

I see this all too often. Many newbies will form the English sentence and then mentally translate it to the foreign language they are learning and then speak the sentence. They also do the same thing when they are listening to the foreign language.

You will never master any foreign language if you translate sentences in your head. It takes too long and it is very tiring.

You will also never have a long conversation because you will be worn out translating sentences back and forth.

I live overseas and I see this in my foreign co-workers. I always tell them to stop doing it and to keep on studying and practicing so forming sentences become natural. In the beginning it will be hard but after awhile it will come more naturally. As we mentioned before “practice makes perfect”.

Tip #5

IMMERSION IS THE KEY

Find a native speaker for the foreign language you are learning and talk to them every day, don’t be shy.

You would be surprised to find out how many people are willing to teach you their native language. There are many people in the US that speak foreign languages, find that person(s). This will pay huge dividends. The native speaker can help you with your pronunciation, your sentence structure, and more.

If your parents are native speakers of the language you are studying you’re in luck. Have them speak to you in that foreign language every day. You will learn so much more quickly and efficiently.

A toddler will learn whatever language is being spoken in his environment. His parents could speak English, Spanish, French, Chinese, etc. The toddler is exposed to the languages 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 365 days a year. My kids are bilingual because I speak English them and their mother speaks to them in a foreign language and also English.

We don’t give our kids any extra schooling to learn both languages. We just go through our normal day and talk to the kids and read them books like any other American parent teaching English the only difference is that they hear two languages every day.

I know of some kids who speak 4 languages! Can you believe that? That is possible because their parents speak a couple of languages apiece. Immersion is a very powerful learning tool, use it!

There you have it the “Top 5 Tips for Learning a Foreign Language”. With these tips I’m sure you’ll have a better chance at mastering a foreign language.

One last note, after you have mastered one foreign language there are other foreign languages that are similar that you might be also interested in learning. Learning Spanish will give you a leg up if you want to study Portuguese, French, or Italian. So no matter what foreign language you master there will probably be another foreign language that is similar to it and mastering that is a definite possibility if you follow our tips.

Stacy Hokama works overseas and teaches his foreign co-workers English. He also recommends the using study material by Tell Me More, the world’s leading language learning software. Learn Spanish,German,French, and more!

Reality Versus San Diego Golf Academy And Other Golf Schools

May 29, 2008

When scouting golf schools, names such as San Diego Golf Academy, Professional Golfers Career College and many others can pop up over and over again. With every venue claiming to have the best educational standards, it can be slightly overwhelming to figure out which will offer the most benefit. There can be many aspects to consider when making a decision and each aspect can vary in importance from one individual to another.

First and foremost, a teaching staff that is fully certified in addition to an accredited curriculum are the two most important features of a reputable school. A lack of accreditation means the degree one earns is likely to have no standing with future employers. A curriculum should not only be accredited but full of knowledge that will be applicable once a graduate has made the transition to working in the golf industry.

Schools often list their accrediting agencies openly. An accredited golf school is one that will be able to provide qualifying students with financial aid plus career counselors. Help from a career counselor can ensure prospective students invest their time and energy wisely by matching their skills to the appropriate golf career.

Along with financial aid, there are some golf schools that can help with housing and relocation services as well. For those attending a golf school in a whole new city, this can be an extremely valuable service. It should be noted that one must often qualify for the service by meeting certain requirements.

Even if it is a rather large institution, a golf school of good standing is one that offers reasonable class sizes. Most golf schools keep their class sizes small as a rule of thumb to begin with. However, less than reputable organizations will often try to put too many students in a class for the sake of cost.

Location will also be a factor when choosing a golf school. More often than not, a golf school will be located in states where weather is conducive to playing golf year round. For example, San Diego Golf Academy and many other schools have locations in Florida, Arizona and California.

For many, cost will play a major factor when choosing what school to attend. While this is definitely a key issue to consider, it is important to remember that choosing an expensive school is not always a guarantee of quality and opting for the cheapest venue can mean getting exactly what one pays for. It is important to remember there is possibility for financial aid with accredited institutions.

Once an individual develops a list that most closely meets their requirements, it is a good idea to then pare the list down to three options. Once this is done, an onsite tour of each campus can help make the decision final clearer. Most schools openly welcome and even encourage onsite tours of their campus and facilities.

An onsite tour will allow one to not only see facilities firsthand but also get a better idea of the atmosphere of a school. It also provides a chance to talk to current students and get an insider’s view of the program. Plus, some schools offer prospective students a free game of golf upon taking a tour of their campus.

Whether one decides to attend the San Diego Golf Academy or any other venue, this major investment of time and money requires keeping at least one foot in reality at all times. If one is looking to have a long-term career in golf, schools that make lofty promises or offer more flash than substance should be promptly disregarded.

Call Of Duty 4 Modern Warfare : Just How Modern Is It?

May 29, 2008

Yet again Infinity Ward brings a new sequel of the infamous Call of Duty series but this time it is not about World War II any more!

For those who have played the entire series of the Call of Duty games you know that the previous games had a certain style to them. That style was to follow the characters through their journey of the World War II. The new Call of Duty 4: Modern warfare by Infinity Ward is brought to you in a whole new modernized way! During the game you are now following a tightly narrated structure that is quite appealing to most types of players.

You find yourself feeling as though you are really a part of the game. You could almost swear that the plot for this game is taken right from the headlines of the daily news. Call of Duty 4 touches on several hot issues such as the missing Soviet era warheads, the fundamentalism of the Islamic and so many other issues. This was quite a surprise to me, especially since I was not really expecting very much from the story itself. I was pretty stunned with the fact that I was hooked on this game just after a few minutes of game play. I find that because the plot is show in scenes that are placed in a first person perspective, it was much more exciting and held my attention a lot faster than other games that are set up differently.

A great part of Call of Duty 4 is the fact that you seem to grow attached to those soldiers in the game. These are the guys who are fighting along side you and even though they might just be players in a video game, the sense of a tight relationship builds as all of you look out for each other and fight along side each other.

The only complaint I have is the fact that you can’t pass out orders to your teammates. This is however over shadowed by the fact that the other soldiers have the capabilities to hold their own during battle and at times excellent greatly on their own. I did find myself a little lost in the game a few times and unsure of where to go but when that happened all I had to do was watch where my teammates were headed and I followed them into battle. They really can be a great asset to the whole experience of playing Call of Duty 4 , They provide essential help during the missions and even if I can not give out orders, the fact that they saved my butt several times during the game well makes up for that!

Overall, I think that Call of Duty 4 for the Xbox 360 is a great game that will surprise those who are unsure of playing it. For those who love the game this is just one more reason to love Call of Duty all over again.

Golf Schools Pave The Way To Happy Careers

May 29, 2008

If one is looking to launch a career in the golf industry, golf schools will become a very necessary aspect to consider. Whether one is looking to work in management or instruction, it will be important to first gain all the right skills. Golf is the type of sport that requires attention to detail and it is no different when it comes to taking on a golf related career.

These days, golf courses rarely hire unskilled individuals off the street. This is because golf courses and resorts know their clientele expect and require efficiency. A staff of well-trained professionals ensures that a golf course or resort stays running in the most competent manner possible.

Though having a strong passion for golf is a bonus, it is more important to have a strong core knowledge of one’s chosen profession. Golf schools provide just the right foundation for launching a career in the right direction. This is because of a solid curriculum that offers everything an individual will need while in the workforce.

Thanks to the millions that play golf regularly and as a hobby, there are a vast number of jobs in golf to be had. No matter what city one goes to, there is likely to be at least one municipal golf course. If the metropolis is even larger, there is likely to be any number of private golf courses as well.

This means that there will be a need for individuals with administrative skills to run the golf course. Instructors will be needed to offer coaching services to clientele of all age ranges and skill levels. Attending the grounds and caring for equipment such as golf carts will require those skilled in golf related maintenance.

Golf schools can offer an education in such things as business and instruction that is specifically tailored to the golf industry. Because the sport encompasses everything from business to physical science and even horticulture, it is necessary to have an eye for detail. Studying each of these aspects in a golf related context can make it easier to transition into the workforce upon graduation.

Unbeknownst to many, earning a degree from a golf school will require a good amount of time in the classroom. One of the main benefits of this type of education is the small class sizes that allow each student to better absorb course material. Plus, a certified instructor with professional experience teaches every class in a golf school.

Opting for a golf school of good standing will mean attending accredited institutions only. Though there are many organizations that call themselves a golf school, few have gone through the lengthy and expensive process of being recognized by the proper agencies. If one expects the degree they earn to be considered legitimate, this is of utmost importance.

Accredited schools are able to offer their students such things as financial aid and other useful services. This can make getting a degree just that much easier, especially for those who have been hesitating to earn a degree in golf due to concerns over tuitions.

One can earn an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in the area of their choice. An associate’s is often the minimal requirement for taking on entry-level positions in some areas of the golf industry. In others, a bachelor’s degree and a certain number of years of experience will be a must.

Golf schools offer a unique education for a unique and much admired career. No matter what the line of work, it is an industry where one can branch out and grow in their career as they grow personally.
