How A Water Distiller Works

Steam distillers are one of the oldest and one of the most effective ways to purify drinking water. Steam distillation utilizes a very simple process that mimics the natural processes that purify the water on the Earth. On earth, this process is called the hydrologic cycle. The hydrologic cycle is a process of events where water moves through the on and through the Earth and atmosphere in its liquid and vapor forms. This process is powered exclusively by the energy of the sun.

The hydrologic cycle begins with the water that exists on the surface of the earth. This includes water in soil, rivers, lakes, streams, oceans and on every other surface you can imagine. Sunlight strikes the water and energizes some of the water molecules enough to turn them from liquid to vapor. This process is often referred to as evaporation. Since the water vapor is warmer than the water it came from, it rises and enters the atmosphere. In order to understand how this process purifies water, it’s important to understand that only pure water is light enough to be vaporized. As water turns from liquid to vapor it releases it’s impurities. The now pure water rises up higher into the atmosphere and in doing so becomes cooler and cooler. It combines with other vaporized water molecules to become microscopic droplets. Droplets combine to form what we know as clouds. The droplets continue to condense with other droplets and grow in mass until the droplets can no longer be suspended in the air. This is when it rains. It should be noted that rain is very pure when it first forms, but picks up contaminants as is falls through the Earth’s atmosphere.

So, in nature it is the process is vaporization and condensation which leads to the formation of pure water. A steam distiller operates in virtually the same way. First, the reservoir of the distiller is filled with tap water. The water is then heated until it boils. Steam (aka water vapor) then rises out of the boiler and enters a condensation loop. Remember, as with the hydrologic cycle, when water vaporizes it leaves behind all of its contaminants. In the condensation loop there is a spiral of stainless steel that is cooled by air with a fan. As steam contacts the sides of the cooling loop it condenses and trickles down towards the spout.

It’s at this point that a steam distiller varies slightly from the natural hydrological process. Some contaminants in water have the same boiling point and condensing properties as the water itself. That means that they are able to travel through the distiller with the water and could end up in the purified water. For this reason, most high quality steam distillers include a carbon filter cup that acts as a final purification stage, before the water is dispensed into the collection cup. The activated carbon filter cup removes any remaining contaminants leaving only pure, clean, healthy water.

When shopping for a steam distiller look for products that utilize high grade stainless steel in the boiler and condensing coil and of course, look for products that are supported by a manufacturer’s warranty.

Portable Hot Tubs on the Move

Hot tubs are popular today with many homeowners; however, many doubt the purchase of a hot tub because they cannot move it with them if they move to another location. Outside, you do not have to worry about digging and building a deck around your hot tub because you can place it anywhere you want, above ground. Just be sure you are close enough to water and electricity so that you portable hot tub will work adequately.

Regular hot tubs can be quite expensive and for the average homeowner they may not want to pay that price. Portable hot tubs are found to be much more affordable. The main reasons for this are that they are not as sturdy as a regular hot tub and smaller in size. It can still last several years if you take care of it, just as a regular hot tub would.

With a portable hot tub, you will still have the same type of exciting experience that you would with a traditional hot tub. Majority of the portable hot tubs will accommodate 4 adults and can still come equipped with a jet massage blower. You can also find out that has a filtration system. The portable hot tub can be set up quickly and easily, usually within no more than 20 minutes.

How a Good Study Guide Helps

Today there are a plethora of resources for students preparing to take a particular exam. The question then becomes how to choose the right study guide and how they can help. The student doesn’t know whether the test is difficult, tricky or not too bad. Some students assume that they are ready and go in to bomb the test, while others feel that they need tons more preparation, yet ace the test. This is a bad habit because not only is critical information missed, but also the student is likely to score poorly on the questions about the reading. This part of the study guide helps the student slow down their reading and helps them practice their skills of identifying what is important in the reading. Practice makes perfect and the more we read, the more that we get out of it.

The writing practice of the study guide is another great way to prepare for an upcoming exam. Taking a topic and building an outline and essay around it is a good way to be prepared for what ever the test may throw your way. Not only do practicing writing skills help beef up the old skills, it also helps the student put their thoughts on paper. Sometimes with computers, word processors and other technological advances in society individuals come to rely on them, therefore allowing their skills to slip. This can be seen with employees, students, workers and the general populations writing skills. When we do not use our writing skills our grammar, spelling and punctuation suffer. So the practice does us good and helps us prepare for the writing portion of any test.

A good study guide helps the student prepare in every way for the exam. It is important that a student take advantage of any opportunity to improve themselves or their grades. Study guides are meant to be used as tools, help set goals and improve the confidence level of the student. Without all of these things students will not perform as well as they possibly could have. Bob Hope: His Classic Television Performances

Bob Hope is hands-down the most acclaimed, honored and versatile entertainer in show business history. During his seventy-plus years in the entertainment industry, Hope earned more than two thousand awards and recognitions for his various professional and humanitarian work, including an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II, a Congressional Gold Medal from President Kennedy, the Medal of Freedom from President Johnson, and fifty-four honorary doctorates. Hope’s Christmas specials, USO shows, radio and television programs, and regular appearances on numerous sitcoms and variety shows have some of the highest ratings of any primetime telecasts. Because of this well-deserved praise, it is difficult to choose only a few television appearances as the “Best Of” Hope’s career. Instead, it is better to look at the huge variety of shows Hope appeared on and why this versatile performer became America’s most beloved entertainer.

Born in England May 29, 1903, Hope and his family traveled to America in 1908 aboard the SS Philadelphia. Ironically, Hope was a relative latecomer to television; he dabbled in experimental broadcasts with NBC in the 1930s but held off almost twenty years before starting his illustrious career. He began his official television career on Easter Sunday, 1950, on NBC. His specials, most of which were sponsored by the Chrysler corporation, were often hysterically unscripted variety programs that featured such guest stars as Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Marilyn Monroe and Dina Shore.

Christmas Specials

Hope got significant recognition for his gut-busting Christmas specials. These specials ran for years and featured duet performances of “Silver Bells” by Hope and adorable young guest stars, such as Olivia Newton-John and Brooke Shields. The most memorable Bob Hope Christmas specials were, without a doubt, his 1970 and 1971 episodes. Filmed in front of military audiences at the height of the Vietnam War, these specials actually aired in January –after Hope was back in the United States— and were seen by more than sixty percent of television-viewing households in America. Like his other Christmas specials, the Vietnam shows were all about celebrating the traditional joy, peace and good cheer of the season. His use of humor, beautiful women and talented performers were a welcome respite from the horrors of the war itself.

USO Performances

Hope is probably best known for his performances for the United Service Organization (USO), beginning with his USO debut at March Field, California, on May 6, 1941. Hope performed USO shows throughout World War II, prompting acclaim from such contemporaries as John Steinbeck. “It is impossible to see how he can do so much,” Steinbeck wrote in 1943, “can cover so much ground, can work so hard, and can be so effective.” Hope continued his USO shows during the Korean War, Vietnam War and Persian Gulf War, heading roughly sixty tours in total. Because of his tireless dedication to the overseas troops, Hope was awarded the impressive Sylvanus Thayer Award by the U.S. Military Academy in 1968. He was named an Honorary Veteran by a 1997 act of Congress, signed by President Clinton, a recognition Hope referred to as “the greatest honor I have ever received.”

Sitcom Appearances

Hope also appeared on a number of popular television programs during his career. Hope did a guest spot on America’s favorite TV show of the 1950s, “I Love Lucy”. Supposedly, Hope balked at the idea of using a script. He ad-libbed the entire episode, legend goes, giving one of his best performances in the process. He also appeared on the Danny Thomas Show, the Jack Benny Show, the Ed Sullivan Show, the Donny & Marie Show, and others.

Saying Good Bye

Hope bid a nostalgic farewell to his television audiences in 1996 with “Laughing with the Presidents,” a special he co-hosted with Tony Danza. In this special, Hope gave a very personal tribute to the U.S. presidents he had known and worked with during his career; Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Kennedy, Johnson, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and others. The show was a fitting and entertaining good-bye to the hardest working entertainer in American history.

It’s not surprising that Bob Hope was so heavily recognized for his work. Radio and television programs, USO shows, Christmas specials, books, movies; the man did it all. He helped the world smile during troubling times. He lent his celebrity status to good causes. He championed humor and fun as the best tool in achieving peace at home and abroad. Hope wasn’t only a great entertainer; he was an amazing humanitarian.

The Tear Jar- An Explosion of Blues Music

Anyone who has ever listened to the “Blues” knows that it is more than just music, but an inspiration, an unfolding of the emotions that we all feel. From Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon and many other influential Blues legends, to the more contemporary Blues artists such as Robert Cray, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Blues music has and always be a part of out musical heritage.

Capturing the essence and spirit that the Blues represent is a novel “Blues Musical” called “The Tear Jar.” Not focusing on a particular band or individual, the “Tear Jar” instead is a collaboration and meeting of the minds of many talented people including producer Chris Bravacos, song writer Robert Welch, audio engineer Frank Silver and writer Jerry King Musser.

Blended into the musical are the rare talents of musicians such as: industry veteran Diane Wilson (singing the character of Savannah), talented Bluesman Don Johnson (singing the character of Mason Ball), Blues guitar virtuoso Jared James Nichols (singing the character of JD Hunter), Jazz sensation Rose Hudson (singing the part of Chandra), veteran Gospel singer Eugene Barclift (playing the character of Stubs) and Soul Music vet Charles Lee (as the Preacher), among others.

To set up the story, one needs to know what a ‘tear jar’ is and what it represents. In ancient cultures, water was a prized possession and giving up water from one’s own body, in the form of tears, was considered a personal sacrifice. They would catch their precious tears in tiny pitchers or ‘tear jars.” The ‘saved’ tears could then be used to ward off evil or to help a sick child. The writer takes this belief and implements into the storyline and applies it to the infectious Blues songs that encompass and define the musical. Here is a brief synopsis of the story:

“Seasoned, itinerant blues man, Mason Ball, returns to The Blue Rose, a club in which he enjoys playing, with an owner he deeply ‘admires.’ Upon his arrival, he’s surprised to discover that a ‘new kid in town’ has claimed the stage and attention of an appreciative audience. This young upstart, one JD Hunter, is unwilling to relinquish the limelight and makes it clear that the ‘old blues’ is dead. To add to the tension, Mason’s private love interest shares with him a serious, personal loss. Frustrated with his inability to appease her emotional pain, Mason dips his finger into a jar of tears given him by his recently departed mother and touches her with the potion. This act, apparently, manifests in wondrous results… relieving her of her anguish. Mason doubts his healing powers, yet can’t dismiss the changes he seems to have made. When word gets out, the audience demands Mason’s appearance onstage and seem to come for his ‘gift of healing’ as much as his gift of song. JD challenges Mason’s abilities, those both spiritual and musical. When a plan to expose Mason backfires, JD Hunter learns what it’s like to be on the receiving end of ‘the gift.’ But, gift or not, the characters in this story find themselves at a new place in their lives after discovering life’s potential magic is available to anyone.”

I have not seen the production, but have listened to some of the music and was overjoyed to hear a dizzying array of crisp, fresh Blues cuts that are certain to be standards and will have die-hard Blues fans clamoring for more.

“When Does The Healing Begin” is full of Gospel-fueled licks and superb vocals that fuses the Blues and Gospel in an explosion of sound. The cut called “The Magic,” like any great Blues song, just bleeds emotion, from the growling vocals and the Stevie Ray Vaughan-like riffs, yet it still remains achingly tender. “Satisfier” is expertly played and sang, with sultry vocals and is sung with immeasurable passion and strength. “I’m Gone,” is bound to become a classic blues rocker, tight and structured, and just compels you to bob your head or tap your foot with melodic adventure. “Stormbringer” perfectly fuses Soul and Blues music, with impassioned vocals and stellar guitar and organ work.

“The Tear Jar” is bound to become an instant classic Blues production, with fresh Blues music for all fans of the genre, who are sure to be pleased with the efforts of all the performers and everyone who is involved with this wondrous project. In its beginning stages, “The Tear Jar” has a performance slated for the Sunoco Performance Theater on Thursday, August 7 and Friday August 8, 2008 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. And with an intriguing storyline, a stellar cast and new Blues standards, it will soon make a bold impression in the music world and specifically Blues music.

I Am Going To Be Famous - Or Perhaps Not!

The other day I was at a Karaoke and heard someone say that they were going to apply for one of the music reality shows, that we see too much of on TV. I don’t intend to mention the show, but instead make some truthful observations on the realities of making it big as a singer.

The comment above is one I have heard often in various places from numerous people, but the truth is most of them just do not have the talent, and those that do rarely make it to the big time. So you sing on Karaoke and at home, your mates think you are great so do your family, so you must have something, right? .. Wrong! Just because your friends and family say you are great does not mean that you are. Too often they do not tell you the truth. I have heard countless bad singers who think they are great because someone told them so, normally a friend or family member, when the reality is they sound like a moose gargling broken glass. Sometimes it pays to listen to your enemies.

I run an entertainment agency based in the UK and often people will ask my opinion on how they sound, and I am honest with them. I try to be diplomatic, but if they are bad then I tell them the nicest way I can. I have to admit that being honest hasn’t always gone down well with people, but if you ask a question don’t be surprised by the results. I know it seems harsh to shatter someone’s elusion but sometimes it’s for the best. If they were told the truth many would not apply for these reality shows and have to suffer the humiliation of being told how bad they are with it broadcast to millions (although it would make the auditions very boring).

I have been to show calls, these are events where agents showcase acts they represent, where some of the acts have received the following comment from me Karaoke. What do I mean by this? The truth is that they would be great Karaoke singers but certainly not good enough to entertain an audience for an evening, this remark tells me not to book them. At the end of the day it is my reputation on the line. Now it could be that they just had an off day, but would I want to risk it, the answer is no. I also get to hear lots of quality acts that I would book so it is not all bad. Many of these quality acts will never make the jump to stardom, but they can make a good living as entertainers. Some of these people are very gifted individuals who deserve the big break, but the reality is that it will never come. It is those outside the industry that think it is easy.

So what would I suggest to those reading who do have some ability? The answer is find a good agent, and if they are interested in hearing you go for an audition, and wait to see what happens. Management companies are also a good way to go as they are often looking for new talent, and if they are interested in you they will help develop you. Perhaps one day you will be the next big thing to hit music, but in the meantime you can make money doing something you are good at. The breaks may come or like many pass you by, but you will be entertaining people, they will be watching you, and there is a lot to be said for the buzz a performer feels from the audience.

As an aside to what I have already written and to make my point, I would like to share the following with you. A young lady of my acquaintance recently had an audition for one of the aforementioned reality music shows; she has a trained singing voice, and has sung with a choir at The Royal Albert Hall. She is young (21) and pretty and most importantly has talent, yet they turned her down. With some nurturing she has the ability to be a great entertainer. Stardom used to be something that was earned, nowadays it is something that is fickle and managed, it is manufactured for the mass market, and has little regard for anything except the next pay check. Cynical perhaps, but when you look at the wealth of talent out there, sometimes it makes you wonder. They are not so much like the talent shows of yesteryear that launched many careers; they are more like cattle markets herding the masses to the slaughter in the name of ratings.
